WATCH: Local paddlers fare well in Orange Descent Canoe Marathon
Gauteng paddlers enjoyed the Orange River descent on November 9 and 10, in the South African K1 River Championship Race.
Day one started at Die Punt Resort, Friersdale, when paddlers did 26km to Die Mas Resort, Kakamas.
Day two started at Sakkie Se Arkie, Upington, following 28km to Oranje Rus, Kanoneiland.
The winner was Hamish Lovemore, second Thomas Lovemore, with Gauteng’s Wally Fisher in third place (SGM) from Centurion Canoe Club (CCC) with Krzysztof Lapacz and Pieter Engelbrecht, as well as Ronald Pronk (also CCC) finishing 11th, 12th and 14th overall.
Others from the CCC team who finished this iconic race included Johan Strydom and Pierre-André van Leeuwen, and Wayne Lotter K2 with Alet Bosman.
Victoria Lake Canoeing Club team finishers were Uwe Schmidthaus in 26th overall, Helen Jansen van Vuuren the fifth female finisher, second U23 Roelof Greyling, and Anthony Welsh K2.
Deon Vermaak, based in Alberton, paddled in a group with his co-club members Robert Hamer and Ryan Booysen.
