Calvary Christian College on May 5 hosted its first cross-country event at the site of the High School’s new building.
The event attracted athletes from 11 schools across Johannesburg South and East, with nearly 100 participants.
The challenging course proved to be a test for the runners, with many crossing the finish line visibly tired yet proud of their accomplishment.
The ‘monster hill’ was a challenging obstacle the runners had to tackle as part of the 2km track.
Despite the tough conditions, athletes embraced the challenge and finished the race with a sense of achievement.

The course, designed by Mrs Nel, Calvary’s passionate athletic coach, was perfect for a cross-country event.
“The terrain behind the school, with its up and downhill sections, was ideal for setting up a cross-country track,” Mrs Nel said. With the help of the school staff and brush cutters, the idea became a reality.
The track featured a combination of flat sections, steep climbs and descents, and rough terrain, making it a test of endurance.
The senior boys had to complete the track three times, making it 6km, while junior boys and girls ran the course twice.
The event’s success was so overwhelming that Calvary Christian College decided to host three more cross-country events this year in preparation for the Gauteng regionals towards the end of the season.

“This event was an enormous success, and we are excited to see more athletes from around the region taking part in future events,” said the organisers.
The 2km track, while challenging, is also ideal for primary schools. Any neighbouring schools interested in setting up a primary school cross-country league or wish to use the track may contact the principal on 010 448 1573 or email principal@calvarychristiancollege.co.za
“Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches, and organisers for making this event a memorable start to what promises to be a great season of cross-country running at Calvary Christian College,” said a school representative.
