WATCH: 3 lanes closed after truck driver killed in N12 crash near Comaro Road

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes as a fatal truck crash has left only one westbound lane open on the N12.

As of 17:00, recovery operations were still underway following the earlier fatal collision on the N12 westbound near the Comaro Road off-ramp. Traffic had backed up to before the Reading Interchange, with motorists experiencing heavy delays.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible while the scene continues to be cleared.


A truck driver lost his life in a collision involving a heavy-tonnage truck and a minibus taxi on the N12 westbound, just after the Comaro Road off-ramp in the Bassonia/Gleneagles area this Thursday morning.

According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the truck driver sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

“The driver of the minibus taxi escaped without injuries, and no other injuries have been reported. JMPD extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” said Fihla.

Heavy load crushed truck cabin

Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck’s heavy load shifted forward during the collision, crushing the truck’s cabin and fatally injuring the driver.

Emergency services, JMPD officers and specialised recovery teams remain on the scene working to remove the heavy load and recover the damaged truck.

The road closure has caused severe congestion, with traffic backing up for a considerable distance.

Motorists travelling westbound are urged to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes, including the R59, South Rand Road, Verona Street and Rifle Range Road.

JMPD officers are managing traffic while recovery operations continue. Authorities have warned that delays are expected to persist for several hours.
