Southside Stormers take youth tournament title
The Southside Stormers Basketball Club continues to put the south on top.
The Bertha Solomon Sports and Recreational Centre in Jeppestown came alive when more than 300 young athletes from across Johannesburg gathered for the annual Victory Youth Group (VYG) Sports Tournament on November 22.
The event showcased the talents of youth in soccer, netball, basketball and chess, drawing crowds and competition from all corners of the city.
Among the standout performances was the dominant run by the Southside Stormers Basketball Club, representing the south of Johannesburg in basketball.
Facing some of the city’s most competitive teams, the Stormers showed remarkable skill, teamwork and determination.
Their consistency earned them three consecutive wins, including a thrilling final that secured their place as the 2025 VYG Sports Basketball Champions.
Speaking with one of the VYG Sports representatives, it was clear that the tournament is about far more than trophies or game results.
“The VYG tournament goes beyond just the games played. It is designed to unite the youth, help them build meaningful relationships, and create an environment where they can develop their talents while growing in confidence and purpose,” the representative explained.

The sense of unity and empowerment was echoed by the chairperson and coach of the Southside Stormers, Nathi Madubaduba.
Filled with pride after his team’s campaign, he said he appreciated the event and its organisers.
“We are grateful for the invitation by VYG Sports and the opportunity to participate in an event of such magnitude and purpose,” he said.
He applauded the dedication behind the scenes, adding, “The team responsible for planning this event deserves recognition. The impact they are making on the youth of Johannesburg is inspiring and transformative. We are honoured to have been part of it.”
As the sun set over the Bertha Solomon Centre, the Southside Stormers lifted their championship title high, not just as winners of the basketball tournament, but as proud representatives of the spirit and potential of Johannesburg’s youth.
The tournament again proved that when young people have the space to grow, compete and connect, the results reach far beyond the scoreboard.
