Runners brave wet weather at Johannesburg City Marathon

Runners gathered at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve to tackle the scenic and challenging route.

The 2026 Johannesburg City Marathon took place on March 22, at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve in Kibler Park, Johannesburg.

Despite the wet weather, over 5000 runners participated in the event, which included a 42.2km marathon, 21.1km half marathon, and 10km race.

The event, organised by the Johannesburg Harriers Athletics Club, saw participants tackle the scenic yet challenging route through Johannesburg’s southern suburbs.

The 42.2km marathon started at 06:00, followed by the 21.1km half marathon, and the 10km race kicked off at 07:00.

“We are thrilled with the turnout despite the weather conditions,” said Donavan Goliath, chairperson of the Johannesburg Harriers Athletic Club.

“It’s a testament to the resilience and dedication of our runners. We’re proud to have hosted such a successful event and look forward to seeing everyone back next year.”

The event served as an official Comrades Marathon qualifier, attracting top athletes and enthusiasts alike.
The route began at Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve and wound through hilly terrain and wet pathways, testing runners’ endurance.

The wet weather made the course slippery, especially on the nature reserve trails, requiring athletes to adapt their pacing and footing.
