SAPS Bela-Bela warns residents against scams

The local South African Police Services (SAPS) in Bela-Bela, have issued a cautionary alert to residents regarding a surge in scams targeting prominent businessmen and unsuspecting individuals within the community.

One prevalent scam involves perpetrators posing as police officials, contacting businessmen, and alleging involvement in extramarital affairs. Threatening to expose these alleged affairs unless a payment is made, these imposters manipulate victims into compliance.

“It’s crucial not to engage with these individuals. Immediate blocking of the number is advised, and residents are urged not to succumb to these fabricated allegations,” emphasised Lt. Col. Annemarie Smith.

Additionally, another scheme involves fraudsters masquerading as representatives from a victim’s bank’s fraud department, persuading individuals to give sensitive personal information. Lt. Col.

Smith emphasised that legitimate bank representatives do not initiate contact via phone for such purposes.

“If there are suspicions of fraudulent activity, it’s important to directly contact the bank. Under no circumstances should personal details be shared over the phone,” warned Smith.

Furthermore, Smith alerted the public to a growing trend of phone thefts. Perpetrators often target individuals engaged in outdoor conversations or capturing photographs, seizing the opportunity to snatch the device unexpectedly.

SAPS advises people to keep their phones secure and avoid placement in back pockets where they are easily accessible to thieves.

Stay vigilant and keep your belongings in safeguard.
