Matrics hit hard by Diepsloot fire disaster

DIEPSLOOT - Matric pupils were hit hardest in the Diepsloot fire disaster that destroyed 18 shacks last week, with school supplies and notes going up in smoke.

Along with family household items and shelters, the pupils’ books and school notes were lost in the blaze. This was revealed by DA councillor in the area, Refilwe Mathebula, who managed to donate food parcels to each family over the weekend.

Mathebula sourced the food parcels from Market Square in the Johannesburg CBD after realising that 18 families were not eating proper meals as their food reserves had been destroyed.

The councillor is, however, worried about the schoolchildren who face a bleak future following the destruction of their study material. “My focus now is books, uniforms and clothes for the children,” said Mathebula.

“Examinations are just around the corner and they have to contend with this disturbance.”

Mathebula made a passionate plea to well-wishers to donate clothes, books and food for the schoolchildren.

“Children must be spared the suffering,” he concluded.

Details: Those who wish to donate can contact Mathebula on 082 973 5150.
