Bodibe’s statement followed after allegations of unfair distribution of 60 000 tablets emanated from Diepsloot.
The department splashed R3.5 million on 60 000 tablets which were distributed to matrics in township and rural schools.
“The department is concerned about the allegation of unfair distribution of tablets to schools. Diepsloot schools that were issued with tablets included Sunrise School which received 114 tablets, Diepsloot West Secondary School which received 120, Diepsloot Secondary School which received 57, Diepsloot Combined School which received 102 and Blue Eagle School which received 147.”
The tablets are supposed to be surrendered back after the completion of secondary school, but pupils did not honour that commitment last year.
Some tablets were stolen while others were returned damaged.
Bodibe said he was still collecting information about the number of gadgets which were not returned by Diepsloot pupils.
Also, two schools have already been fitted with LED Smartboards as the department moves towards the establishment of paperless classrooms in the township.
All other schools that did not benefit from the tablets were identified as mobile schools.
Bodibe maintained that his department will continue rolling out the tablet project in Diepsloot this year to Grade 11 and 12 pupils.
