Prepare to be astounded as the Illusionists come to town

Next year is shaping up to be a magical year, not least because for the first time in South Africa some of the greatest illusionists in the world will be performing for local audiences.

In February and March, The Illusionists Direct from Broadway production will be enjoying a 25-day run at the Teatro, Montecasino.

Coming from the international stage, the show will display the talents of eight of the most incredible illusionists on earth: Ben Blaque (the weapons master), Krendl (the escape artist) Den-Den (the manipulator) Christ Cox (the mentalist), Mark Kalin (the showman), Harrison Greenbaum (the trickster), Jinger Leigh (the conjuress) and Darcy Oake (the grand illusionist) have united in an ensemble cast for the show which promises to be magic.

Audiences can look forward to stunning acts of grand illusion, levitation, mindreading and disappearing acts during the show, which has already had record-breaking runs in New York, London and across Asia.

“I think people are fascinated by shows like this because we live in a society where we can find the explanation for just about anything,” explained Darcy Oake. “It’s rare for us to get to experience something that we can’t explain, but that is what this show promises.”

Oake is currently in South Africa to promote the run and had a chance to speak to the Fourways Review during a special media event on 30 November. This is the second time the illusionist has been in South Africa, but the first time he has spent any time in Johannesburg. Oake says the show is so successful in part, because of the eight performers, each with their own area of specialisation, who mesh well as a team and each brings their best to the stage.

“In terms of what people can expect from the show, all I can say is that you can only expect the unexpected,” Oake concluded. “During the performance, there will be hundreds of moments that you just won’t be able to explain!”

The Illusionists Direct from Broadway will be at the Teatro, Montecasino from 14 February to 11 March next year. Weekdays will see a single showing from 8pm, while Saturday and Sunday will see two performances each. Tickets range from R200 – R500 each with discounts for group bookings at certain times.
