Smart empowering women through boxing
Kate Smart transformed her fitness journey into a powerful boxing career, from her first exhilarating punch to her competition debut, she’s breaking down barriers and redefining strength for women everywhere.
In a world where fitness trends come and go, Kate Smart, a fitness enthusiast, has carved out a unique path that has led her to the boxing ring. A journey fueled by passion, community, and personal growth.
For Smart, who has always loved pushing her limits in the gym, traditional workouts became monotonous. It wasn’t until a friend recommended a boxing class at Topbox that she found the thrill she had been searching for.
“There’s nothing more therapeutic than punching a bag, venting frustrations in a healthy way, and getting fit and strong at the same time.”

Nine years later, Smart is deeply entrenched in the boxing community, having transitioned from boxercise classes to competing in White Collar fights. Post-COVID, she felt a strong urge to dive deeper into the technical aspects of the sport.
Encouraged by Stephen Castle, the owner of Topbox, Kate took the plunge and stepped into the ring with renowned trainer Mduduzi Moyo by her side. “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have outside the ring; it’s a level playing field where everyone is challenged,” she said.
A typical day for Smart involves rigorous running, strength training, and, most crucially, sparring sessions. “Moyo doesn’t hold back. Sparring is critical, and my partners and I share the same goal: To learn and protect one another.”
Despite the thriving boxing community, Smart faces common challenges as a female boxer. “There’s a lingering stigma associated with women in boxing. People often question why a woman would want to step into the ring.”

Yet, she remains determined to challenge these perceptions and inspire others. “I want women to know they can box and thrive, regardless of their background or appearance.”
Through this journey, the support of her family has played a pivotal role. “Topbox and Moyo have been incredible, but it’s my husband and children who inspire me the most.” She said the desire to be a role model for her children keeps her motivated even on the toughest days.
Balancing boxing with family life is no easy feat. “It takes sacrifice and dedication, and I often spend time away from them.”
One of Smart’s most memorable experiences in the ring was her first White Collar fight against Bernice ‘The Badger’ Ferreira. “It was one of the scariest six minutes of my life.”
Looking to the future, Smart is content with her recent accomplishments in the sport. “I’m enjoying improving my technical abilities and mentoring newcomers. Who knows? I might do another fight this year.”
Nutrition and self-care are also crucial elements of her training. “You can’t expect your body to show up for you if you don’t show up for it.”
For young girls considering boxing, Smart offers this valuable advice: “Just try it. Take a chance. You have absolutely nothing to lose, but everything to gain.”
