Equestrian sets her sights on higher goals in the horse world

At just 18 years old, Ilana Buck’s love for horses has propelled her from beginner to aspiring competitor in less than two years.

At 18 years old, Ilana Buck is already making a notable impression in the local equestrian scene, demonstrating incredible talent, unwavering dedication, and a deep love for horses.

Despite beginning her riding journey just under two years ago, Ilana’s rapid progress and inspiring story are resonating with fellow riders and supporters alike.

A lifelong horse enthusiast, Ilana’s connection to these majestic animals has been a constant source of joy and purpose. “I’ve loved horses for as long as I can remember. When I finally started riding, I felt like I’d found something that had always been missing. Riding has become such an important part of who I am. It’s where I feel most grounded, most connected, and most inspired.”

Ilana’s journey started at a humble level, learning the basics and trying to find her footing in the saddle. Her early days involved working with multiple instructors, until she met Lara Emmet at Chartwell Stable. “That’s when everything changed. Lara took me from someone who could barely sit properly on a horse, to a capable rider. Her support and belief in me have been life-changing.”

Since then, Ilana’s riding has grown tremendously. She has competed in various shows, including her first 80cm Chartwell training event, where she achieved victory, and her first away show at Stepping Stones at Fourways Riding Centre, experiences that have pushed her outside her comfort zone and further fueled her passion.

Her recent milestone, jumping her first 1.05m obstacle, marks a significant step in her developing career.

Ilana’s immediate goal is to compete at higher graded shows, testing her skills and pushing her limits. “I want to keep growing with every ride and eventually compete in the metre classes.”

Her journey hasn’t been without obstacles, notably overcoming self-doubt. “There were times I questioned if I was good enough or capable of riding certain horses.” But through perseverance, support from her team, and a deep love for riding, Ilana has learned to overcome setbacks and celebrate her successes, both big and small.

Looking ahead, Ilana is actively seeking sponsorship to elevate her riding career. She believes that support would enable her to participate in more competitive events, gain valuable experience, and continue her growth as an athlete. “Sponsorship would mean everything to me. It’s the key to helping me reach my goals.”

Ilana’s story is also one of inspiration. She hopes to show others that it’s never too late to start riding. “What matters is the passion and dedication you bring. You don’t need to have everything handed to you. The connection with your horse, your love for riding, and your effort are what truly count.”

Beyond her achievements, Ilana aspires to motivate others to pursue their dreams in equestrian sports, demonstrating that with perseverance and heart, anything is possible. Her message is simple yet powerful: “Ride with kindness, towards your horse and yourself, and always remember how far you’ve come.”
