The Steyn City Ultra Trail set for 2025
Steyn City prepares to host its first-ever ultra marathon, offering scenic trails, community spirit, and a challenge for runners of all levels in July 2025.
Johannesburg’s trail-running scene is about to get a major boost with the upcoming launch of the Steyn City Ultra Trail, set to take place on July 12.
Born from a desire to bring a premium outdoor endurance event into the heart of the city, this inaugural race promises to become a highlight on South Africa’s trail calendar.
The idea for the event was sparked by a passion to offer runners a top-tier experience amid Johannesburg’s stunning natural surroundings.

Corne van Zyl from In-Reach, the event organisers, explained, “We wanted to create an event that highlights Johannesburg’s outdoor spaces and offers a truly memorable experience. Steyn City offers a perfect mix of scenic views, challenging terrain, and community spirit.”

The race is designed to cater to a wide range of runners, from seasoned ultra-distance athletes to families and newcomers looking to explore trail running for the first time.
Participants will be able to choose from three distances: a 7.5km route perfect for beginners, families, and speedsters; a 21km half-marathon with flowing single tracks and spectacular vistas; and the 53km ultra marathon, which promises a true test of endurance through lush landscapes, river crossings, and iconic landmarks.

The event aims to attract up to 400 runners, ensuring a quality experience for all.
Van Zyl said safety and support were at the forefront of planning.

“A professional medical team will be stationed at the race village and along key points on the course, with rapid access to the entire route, which remains within the secure boundaries of Steyn City. Water stations every 5km will be fully staffed and stocked with hydration and nutrition from 32Gi, helping runners stay fuelled and safe throughout their journey.”
Participants can look forward to a well-organised event with clearly marked routes, accurate timing, festive water points, and a lively race village atmosphere.
Every runner will receive a high-quality goodie bag, including gear from 2XU, a beautifully designed medal, and the chance to win exciting prizes from Retail Insight powered by Telkom at Dainfern Square.

With registration closing on July 7, Van Zyl said, “We’re excited to see a diverse group of runners come out, whether they’re chasing personal bests, sharing a day in nature with family, or just looking for a fun adventure.
This event is about community, challenge, and celebration of Johannesburg’s outdoors.
“This is more than just a race, it’s a celebration of outdoor living and the spirit of adventure right here in Johannesburg. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to the trails in 2025.”
