Heritage Day spirit shines bright at Junior Colleges Fourways

Junior Colleges Fourways celebrated Heritage Day a day early with colourful outfits, delicious traditional meals, and a special cooking class, bringing children, staff, and helpers together in a joyful spirit of culture and community.

At Junior Colleges Fourways, Heritage Day was more than just a dress-up occasion; it became a day of sharing, learning, and connecting.

Celebrated early, on September 23, ahead of the public holiday on September 24, the school’s halls were filled with vibrant colours, the aroma of traditional food, and the sound of laughter.

Children proudly arrived in cultural outfits that reflected the rich diversity of South Africa’s heritage. Teachers and staff, also dressed in traditional attire, helped to create a festive atmosphere that embraced unity and inclusivity.

The highlight for many was a hearty lunch of vetkoek and mince, enjoyed by everyone at the school.

“Heritage Day is such an important celebration,” said Bianca Durrant, principal of Junior Colleges Fourways.

“It reminds us of the richness of our cultural traditions and allows our children to feel proud of their own heritage, while learning to appreciate and respect the beauty of others. It’s about creating a sense of unity, belonging, and shared pride in who we are as a community.”

Adding an extra layer of meaning to the day, the school also hosted a cooking class for the children’s helpers and nannies, teaching them how to prepare Junior Colleges Fourways’ signature mac and cheese.

This thoughtful activity gave caregivers a new recipe to enjoy at home, while also acknowledging their vital role in supporting the children.
