Councillor asks Magaliessig residents to clean up after themselves, and their dogs
Councillor Vino Reddy calls on the community to take responsibility for shared spaces after noticing that people do not pick after their dogs.
Residents of Magaliessig are complaining to Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy over littering and poor public hygiene in their neighbourhood. From illegal dumping along Achter Road, to dog owners failing to clean up after their pets on popular walking routes, such as Troupant Avenue, residents are fed up.
Reddy said he has seen it himself, even in public parks, and it is disturbing. “What began as a few isolated complaints has now turned into a broader discussion within the Ward 93 community group, with residents calling for greater responsibility and respect for shared public spaces.

“Walking my dog, I frequently see this on Achter Road. Apart from the hygiene and environmental issues, it shows a lack of respect for one’s neighbours and community.”
Reddy said section 16 (1) of the council’s Public Open Spaces By-laws, published under Notice 831 in Provincial Gazette Extraordinary No: 179, dated May 21, 2004, says no person may permit any dog to be in a public place, unless it is kept on a leash and under control of a person. “Any person in control of a dog in a public place, excluding a person who is assisted by a guide dog, must remove any defecation of such dog.

“While there are by-laws requiring dogs to be kept on leads, and owners to clean up after their pets, this is ultimately a social and community issue,” said Reddy. “People need to take responsibility and clean up after their dogs, as a matter of basic respect and civic duty toward the community they live in.”
Reddy urged the community to maintain public areas by taking care of them. “These beautification measures are an extension of our community image. It is marred by those who don’t respect our environment and contribute to its decay by not picking up after dogs, littering, and illegal street advertising (estate agent boards, services offered, etc).
“Please pick up after your dog, and remove any and all agent boards, for sale or show house, placed. We cannot let what is happening in the city affect our lives, and lead to moral decay.”
