Steyn City Foundation delivers happiness to Diepsloot

Now in its 14th year, Steyn City’s Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot initiative continues to bring joy, hope, and practical support to children in the neighbouring community.

Steyn City kicked off the festive season early this year with its annual Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot initiative on October 28, marking 14 years of spreading cheer to young learners in the neighbouring community.

What began as a small act of giving has grown into one of the most anticipated events on the Steyn City calendar. This year, more than 14 000 children from seven Diepsloot primary schools will receive a locally made school backpack filled with snacks, stationery, and essentials. The initiative has expanded its reach from 13 500 learners in 2024 to a record number this year.

Each backpack includes a lunchbox packed with treats, a water bottle, and stationery donated by Bidvest. Younger learners (Grades 0–3) will enjoy crayons, colouring books, and play-dough, while older learners receive pencil cases, maths sets, and exercise books.

Steyn City Properties CEO, Steven Louw, said the event has become a symbol of community unity. “It’s a joy to see our residents, staff, and Steyn City School learners working side by side to prepare these gifts. This initiative reminds us of the power of partnership and compassion.”

This year’s special school visit took place at Reshomile Primary School, where learners were treated to lunchboxes sponsored by Bidvest and King Pie. The visit held special meaning for both Steyn City and the school in 2012.

The Steyn City Foundation helped plant 67 trees on the school grounds, which now offer shade to a thriving campus. Principal Katie Deidre Xulu, retiring in January 2026 after 18 years, expressed her delight at hosting the team during her final year.

Beyond the festive drive, Steyn City continues to support Diepsloot year-round through its Growzone project, which supplies fresh vegetables to 51 Early Childhood Development Centres.

Since its launch last year, Growzone has delivered more than 37 000 bunches of produce, providing nutritious meals to more than 3 200 learners and staff daily.

“Delivering Happiness to Diepsloot remains one of our proudest traditions. Each year, seeing the joy on the children’s faces reminds us why we started, and why we continue,” added Louw.
