Cedarwood reaches out continues Students take action

The learners filled 97 handbags with care items, bringing comfort and hope to children who have survived sexual abuse through the Jes Foord Foundation’s Handbag Project.

Cedarwood College has continued its tradition of meaningful outreach each school term.

The first term focused on the elderly, the second on animals, and the third turned attention to children who have survived sexual abuse.

For the third term, the school partnered with the Jes Foord Foundation through their Handbag Project, which supports children under the age of 12.

The initiative encourages participants to purchase a handbag and fill it with care items, creating a comfort bag for a child in need.

“We chose to collaborate with the Jes Foord Foundation on the Handbag Project to raise awareness within the Cedarwood community about gender-based violence and the sexual abuse of children,” said Mazizi Chembe-Mjamba, teacher and outreach co-ordinator.

“The campaign offered a deeply personal way of giving. Each bag carries a message of compassion, renewed hope, and restored dignity, helping children understand that their current circumstances do not define them.”

Maritza van der Merwe, a teacher and member of the outreach team, added: “One of Cedarwood School’s core values is community.

This campaign allowed us to be part of a broader network supporting children who have survived gender-based violence.

“As I filled the bags, I imagined the comfort a child would feel holding onto the teddy bear inside.”

So far, 97 care bags have been donated to the Jes Foord Foundation, each one offering a small but significant gesture of love, care, and hope.
