Shoeboxes spark holiday joy joytudents gives back inhoeboxes
The students got into the festive spirit, filling and personalising Santa Shoeboxes to bring joy to children in need.
This festive season, Broadacres Academy High School students have once again embraced the spirit of giving through their annual Santa Shoebox initiative, bringing smiles and much-needed gifts to children in need.
The idea originated from the school’s student leaders, many of whom had participated in the initiative in 2022 and 2023, supporting organisations such as Miracle Mission Children’s Home and His Heart Ministry.

This year, the project reached the entire school, encouraging students, staff, and parents to come together in a meaningful act of generosity.
“Each student was asked to bring in an empty shoebox, wrapping paper, and contribute R70 towards the contents,” said the school’s Anita Fourie. “The management team and outreach staff then sourced and distributed the items needed to fill the boxes. On the day, students decorated and filled their shoeboxes in their register classes. Personalised cards added a heartfelt touch to each gift.”
Broadacres Academy has a long-standing commitment to supporting organisations like the Brave Hearts Organisation, which aids children and families at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Over the years, the school has contributed Mandela Day Bags of Hope, stuffed toys from Mother’s Day fundraising initiatives, and other donations to support children’s oncology wards.
Fourie said the school’s ethos is grounded in the RISE values: Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence, and built on four pillars: Habit Champions, Summit Climbers, Deeply-Connected Relationship Builders, and Purpose-Driven Contributors.

These values underpin every outreach initiative, fostering a culture where students, staff, and parents can collectively serve their community.
“Each term, we undertake a variety of outreach initiatives, aimed at engaging with our community and making our world a better place. As we continue to grow, our hope is to assist organisations in need as best as we can, creating a ripple of giving and gratitude that extends far beyond our reach.”
The Santa Shoebox initiative is a shining example of Broadacres Academy’s dedication to nurturing, not only academic excellence, but also compassion, community spirit, and social responsibility in its students.
