After a year away, Hobyane sets for return to the ring

Professional featherweight Lucky Hobyane is preparing to step back into the ring following a lengthy layoff. The fighter says the time away has given him a fresh perspective as he eyes his next bout.

Lucky ‘Slargen’ Hobyane is preparing to return to the boxing ring after more than a year away from competition.

The South African featherweight, who fights with his heart on his sleeves, last appeared in November 2024, when he suffered a fifth-round technical knockout loss to Ishmaeel Kadri. With his professional record standing at 3–6–1, Hobyane has been inactive since that bout.

Recently, the fighter confirmed plans for a comeback. “It’s been over a year away from the ring and that time made me reflect a lot. Boxing is in my blood. I missed the lights and the crowd. The ring is where I belong, and I’m ready to show what I’ve got.”

Hobyane, who trains at Topbox Boxing Gym in Fourways, has faced several high level opponents during his career, including Zolisa Batyi and Lindokuhle Khuzwayo. He acknowledged the challenges he has encountered, but stressed his continued commitment to the sport. “Every fight has taught me something. I’ve grown stronger and smarter. I know what it takes to win.

“People counted me out, but that’s when Lucky Hobyane is most dangerous. I respect every opponent, but when that bell rings, respect goes out the window. I’m here to win.”

He also touched on his mental readiness. “I’ve been through tough times, but I’m more focused than ever. I’ve been training hard, putting in the work in the gym every single day. My body feels good, my mind is sharp. This isn’t a comeback for the sake of it. I want to win and show that experience still counts for something.

“Every day I remind myself of why I love this sport, to be the best I can be.”

Details of his return bout, including the date and opponent, have not yet been finalised. “We’re working on it, Everything is coming together. I’m just waiting for the right time.”

Hobyane also spoke about the support he has received during his time away. “To everyone who sent messages and kept believing, thank you. This return is for you too. I won’t disappoint. Expect greatness. I’ve got a fire inside me, and I’m ready to ignite it once again. There’s a lot of talent out there. I want to be part of that next wave of champions.

“This is a comeback for the books. We’ll see what happens next, but I’m ready to get back to work.”
