The Grade 4 Dainfern College pupil is passionate about performing on stage, ballet and contemporary dance. If that’s not enough, Du Plessis also takes piano lessons, sings in the school choir and has recently started playing in a marimba band.
According to her mom Stephanie, at only five-years-old, Du Plessis now 10, convinced the head of Dainfern College Music Department, Patti van der Ploeg, to start singing lessons and since then she has passionately pursued singing with all her energy.
In 2014, she was accepted into the June Kraus International Academy where, under the guiding hand of renowned diva, June Kraus, she developed an impressive repertoire of songs ranging from classical to pop.
In the same year, Du Plessis played the role of Gretl von Trapp in the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Pieter Toerien production of The Sound of Music at Montecasino.
Du Plessis has also been an enthusiastic participant in the National Eisteddfod Academy’s competitions over the past four years at which she has received numerous awards.
The talented pupil also recently won her age category at the West Rand regional round of the Talent Africa competition and will be competing in the National Final Round in the coming week.
Adding to her list of accolades, Du Plessis made her television debut On SABC 1’s YOTV in October in which she sang one of her favourite songs, River of Dreams.
She has completed the London-based Trinity College of Music’s Voice Grade 4 examination, passing with honours in every grade.
Du Plessis will be competing in the 2016 Sanremo Junior Music Festival competition in Italy, a prestigious international competition for singers between the ages of six and 16.
She will be accompanied by the Sanremo Symphony Orchestra and will perform a Hailey Westenra song titled Dark Waltz in the world final on 4 May.
She is the first South African performer to be invited to this prestigious event. Du Plessis said, “I am extremely excited and look forward to experiencing all that it offers.”
