City shares steps to report power outages
Experience a hassle-free way to report electricity issues with City Powers various reporting channels.
Experiencing a power outage or electricity-related issue can be frustrating and inconvenient. City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, shares information on the process residents can take to report power issues.
“City Power has numerous platforms tailored for our customers allowing them to log outage calls for any electricity related queries. These platforms are designed to improve our customer experience and service efficiency.”

The entity also has a new chatbot called Joulene which is available 24/7 on their website: www.citypower.co.za. “She will be able to offer immediate assistance and answer general questions about our services, making it easier for residents to access information,” said Mangena.
Customers can report via their mobile phone by going online to citypower.mobi, or calling 011 490 7484. “There is a toll-free number 0800 003 156 which operates daily from 06h00 to 18h00.”
Social media platforms such as X, formally Twitter, can also be used to contact the power utility using the @CityPowerJHB handle, via Facebook on @CityPowerJohannesburg, and City of Johannesburg walk-in centres.

“To facilitate a smoother reporting process, residents should have their City Power account number if they have a conventional electricity meter. If they are on pre-paid electricity the meter number is required. We will also request the customers’ telephone number, and physical address. Providing accurate information helps us address your concerns quickly,” he advised.
“Once a report is logged, we share the information with our teams who are then dispatched to investigate the cause of the outage, or any electricity related query.”
Residents are also urged to take precautions when reporting power issues.
“Customers are advised to contact City Power directly for any power supply interruption or electricity related queries as only authorised City Power technicians can work on our electrical infrastructure during outages.
“Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities around our infrastructure to our security risk management control on 011 490 7900/7911/7553.
“We understand there may be safety concerns, as some individuals might try to impersonate our personnel when working around our infrastructure. We strongly urge customers to be vigilant and only allow entry to contractors presenting a valid City Power ID card with the contractor’s photograph, name, company name, and a valid expiry date. No contractor should use another person’s ID card.”
For escalations and status updates of logged calls, you can contact the toll-free line.
“One example of why some logged calls are cancelled is when multiple people have logged calls for the same area outage. When power is restored to the area, all of the tickets for that fault will be closed as the problem has been attended to.”
