This one-of-a-kind competition brought together mermaid fitness enthusiasts of all ages to showcase their skills, creativity, and fitness in a mermazing way.
The games were divided into different age groups, ranging from young children, starting from five years, to adult participants, to ensure that everyone got their chance to shine under various competition categories, such as technical figures, choreographed routines, and creative performances.

Each participant was judged on their technical ability, creativity, and the overall flow of their performance. This year’s winners were Alex Jayes, Elif Ayse Aydin, and Ntsumi Madalane.
Izelle Nair, from the school, said, “Participants typically train through weekly Merfit classes, which focus on building core strength, improving agility and lung capacity, and mastering specific mermaid movements and techniques.
“Many of them practice regularly at Merschool, where we offer specialized training sessions designed to help competitors develop the skills needed for both the technical and creative aspects of the Games. Training usually involves a mix of swimming drills, figure practice, choreography, and having fun by playing games and swimming through hoops.”

She said the Tidal Wave Mermaid Tails, a costume store, has played an invaluable role in the success of the Merfit Games.

“Their support has allowed us to provide high-quality, durable, and stunning tails for participants, ensuring that every competitor feels like a true mermaid during their performances. They also help to enhance the overall experience by offering prizes. Their partnership helps us raise the bar each year, ensuring the Merfit Games remains an exciting and evolving event.”
Nair disclosed her ambitions to elevate Merschool’s national presence by competing in international mermaid events, proudly representing South Africa.
“Our long-term goals for the Merfit Games are centred around expanding the sport of mermaid fitness, not just within our local community but also on a national and international level.

“We believe that as more people engage with merfit, both as participants and instructors, we can foster a thriving community and grow mermaiding as a recognized sport in South Africa. Our ultimate vision is to see South African mermaids competing alongside their international peers, proudly showcasing their talent and creativity.”
