Good Samaritan hops into hearts with Easter initiative

The initiative was inspired by the positive response to the Valentine's Day gift-giving event, and Saskia Kunneke plans to continue similar acts of kindness on other notable dates.

Easter is known for its symbols of renewal, hope, and generosity. In the spirit of this festive season, the Greenpark community came together to spread joy and kindness to the residents and staff of the local frail care centre.

Led by good Samaritan Saskia Kunneke, the initiative saw the distribution of 19 Geldof Easter bunnies, to support the local chocolate shop, as well as 81 packets filled with mini hand lotion and marshmallow eggs.

The Easter bunnies were specifically tailored for the twelve residents and seven dedicated staff members at the frail care centre, who were overjoyed by the thoughtful gesture.

According to Kunneke, the inspiration behind this initiative was the overwhelmingly positive response to the Valentine’s Day gift-giving event, where the community showered the frail care centre with bouquets of wool flowers.

“We wanted to continue showing our appreciation for the residents and staff,” she said. “It was Hilary Lombard, one of the residents, who suggested focusing on the frail care centre, as many of these residents are unlikely to leave to visit family during the Easter weekend.”

The residents were thrilled with their chocolate bunnies, with some reportedly calling them: ‘Too cute to eat’, while others dived right in. “It seemed to make everyone happy.”
The additional packets, filled with mini hand lotion and marshmallow eggs, were also well-received, thanks to a generous donation of 100 hand lotions from a client. Kunneke was thrilled to have found a use for the hand lotions, which she described as a: “A handy thing to have on you.”

Kunneke’s vision for the community’s kindness doesn’t stop at this event. “We will do this every year, on all notable dates, like Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas.”
