Sinkhole appears on Craigavon road

Councillor David Foley has escalated the issue to the depot manager of region A, and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has filled the hole with sand, but a complete reinstatement is still needed.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley is worried about the sudden appearance of a sinkhole on the corner of Elm Avenue and Campbell Road in Craigavon, which has raised serious safety concerns for residents and motorists.

The sinkhole, which is believed to have been caused by a leak in a storm water drain, has resulted in a substantial collapse of the road surface, creating a deep and potentially hazardous crater.

Foley said, it has been going on for two weeks. “This is a small sinkhole, from what looks like a storm water drain that has a leak in it and has been wearing away the sand. We’ve tried to make a plan by putting up signs around it, so that people are cautious when driving to avoid accidents.”

He said he has escalated the sinkhole to the depot manager of region A, and hopefully, they can dig it up very quickly, block the storm water, fill it up, resolve it, and reinstate it.

“I would like to ask the residents, in the meantime, to be extra careful when driving on this road, because if you come around this corner too fast, you could lose a wheel or two, because it’s so deep.”

So far, he said the hole has been filled with sand by Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), however, a complete reinstatement is needed to be done.

JRA was contacted for a comment, but none was provided at the time the article was published online.
