Vian is ready for international combat
Local martial artist is set to showcase his talent on the world stages all the way to Wales for the prestigious ICO World Karate Championships.
Vian Hanekom, a learner from Crawford International Fourways, has been selected to represent South Africa at the upcoming International Combat Organisation World Karate Championships.
The prestigious event is scheduled to take place in Wales in October and marks a significant milestone in Vian’s rising martial arts career.
Vian’s journey in karate began at the tender age of just three years old. Reflecting on his early start, he said, “I started just before turning four years old. As I got older, I started to enjoy the focus and discipline it gave me.”

His passion and perseverance have earned him not only national recognition but also the coveted junior Protea colours, an accolade that celebrates outstanding potential in young athletes across South Africa.
Last year, Vian defended his SA Champion title for kata in his belt division at the SA National Championships and also won a bronze medal for kumite, which placed him third overall in South Africa.
This means that he will be awarded Protea colours again this year in addition to his Gauteng colours.

The achievement has brought immense pride to his school community. “Receiving Protea volours means a lot to me. But it also means I have to work hard to make sure I perform at the high standards that come with it.”
Vian credits his coaches, Shihan Cindy and Sensei Monique, for their unwavering support and encouragement. “They always pushed me to be the best I can be.”
Looking forward, Vian aims to make the most of his international experience. “My goal is to try my best and enjoy the experience. A medal for my kata would be great, but I just want to give it my all.”
