Cooper College inducts new leaders in symbolic ceremony
The ceremony featured a candle-lighting ritual, symbolising shared responsibility and unity, passing of the torch from the outgoing head leader to the new one.
Cooper College proudly celebrated the induction of its 2025/26 learner leadership council (LLC) in a heartfelt and symbolic ceremony that underscored the school’s commitment to future-focused, values-based leadership on July 7.
Departing from the traditional prefect model, Cooper College has adopted a more inclusive and intentional leadership structure. “Today’s leadership is no longer about titles,” said executive head Joulia Karamichael in her address to learners, staff, and parents. “It is about purpose, participation, and personal growth. We are investing in the kind of leaders the world needs, those who lead with empathy, initiative, and integrity.”

For the first time ever, each learner leader will be awarded school colours, in recognition of their portfolio-based service, acknowledging leadership as equal in value to excellence in academics, sport, or culture.
Each council member will also receive mentorship from a staff member, to support consistent personal and portfolio development throughout their term.
A highlight of the ceremony was the symbolic passing of the leadership flame. Outgoing head leader Ethan Gillespie reflected on the achievements of the 2024/25 council before officially passing the torch to incoming head leader Chloe Munyai.

International general certificate of secondary education (IGCSE) phase head Tyla Rocha led the moving candle-lighting ritual where each new council member lit their candle from Munyai, a striking symbol of shared responsibility, unity, and inspiration.
Advanced subsidiary (AS) phase head Samy Chulu commended the democratic voting process used to elect the council, emphasising its fairness, transparency, and learner-driven integrity.
The ceremony marked not only a leadership transition but a reaffirmation of the values that guide the Cooper College community. “As each flame was lit, we were reminded that leadership is not about shining alone; it’s about igniting those around you,” said Rocha.
