Nova Pioneer to host full-day chess tournament, with holistic twist

Hosted by Lonehill Chess Academy at Nova Pioneer, the event promises intense battles across five rounds, with official Chess SA ratings at stake. As players aim for provincial qualification, families can also enjoy yoga sessions, physiotherapy, and more.

Lonehill Chess Academy is set to host a major youth chess tournament at Nova Pioneer School in Paulshof on August 2, bringing together players from across Gauteng for a full day of competitive action.

The tournament, officially rated by Chess South Africa and run under the auspices of Johannesburg Metro Chess (JMC), will follow a five-round Swiss format, with a time control of 60 minutes per player.

It is expected to attract a strong field of competitors, especially those aiming to improve their national ratings ahead of the upcoming closed provincial and regional championships.

Tournament director and coach Jay Venky confirmed that the sections will be seeded primarily by school grade, divided into sections A, B, C, U10, and U8. However, players with existing Chess SA ratings will have those ratings factored in during the pairing process, in line with Federation International des Echecs (FIDE) tournament standards.

“This is a crucial opportunity for young players to gain official rating points,” said Venky. “Given the timing of this event, many will be looking to improve their rankings for qualification into the year-end championships.”

In terms of rewards, sections A and B will offer cash prizes, along with gold, silver, and bronze medals. Other sections will compete for medal honours, keeping the competitive spirit high across all age groups.

Beyond the competition, the tournament will also feature family-friendly activities. Lonehill Chess Academy plans to launch its new Vyana Yoga Studio at the event, offering a free yoga session for parents and non-playing guests.

Additional wellness features include a physiotherapy camp, and, possibly, a short comedy show, creating a lively and engaging environment for all attendees.

“This is not just about chess,” added Venky. “It’s about creating a holistic experience for the players and their families.

“Besides the intense vibe that we expect at each tournament for the competitors, its important to note that this one of the last tournaments before the yearly closed provincial and regionals championships, where the current ratings are critical. In that sense, it’s expected that more and more players shall try to play, to improve their ratings to be selected for the annual closed championship.”
