High school sweethearts say yes to forever more on top of Lonehill Koppie

At the very top of Lonehill Koppie, with the city below and the sky stretching wide above, a man knelt on one knee and asked the love of his life the biggest question ever. Nearby residents couldn’t help but smile and snap pictures.

He didn’t just ask her to marry him; he took their love to the very top of the world, or at least it felt that way.

At the top of the historical Lonehill Koppie, a tall, rocky hill with big, strong boulders, he knelt on the rocks and asked the question that would change everything. Would you marry me?

From up there, the city below looked small, and the sky stretched wide above them. The wind danced around the boulders, and for a few perfect moments, it felt like the whole world was holding its breath, waiting for her answer.

People living nearby saw what was happening. They grabbed their cameras and zoom lenses, capturing the joy that made the hilltop proposal the topic of the town.

This is the story of Niren Subramoney and his now fiancée, Talia Pillay.

“I chose the koppie because it’s a place that quietly tells our story. From the top, you can see Crawford, the high school where we first met and where everything began. In the distance, you can spot our home, the first home we’ve built together. Being up there, surrounded by the view of our past and our present, felt like the perfect place,” said Subramoney.

He said he could feel his heart beating out of his chest when the moment came for him to drop down on one knee to ask Pillay the big question.

“After hiking up the koppie, Talia and I stood together, taking in the breathtaking view. I began sharing the symbolism behind the spot. As I spoke, a wave of emotions hit me: excitement, nervousness, and a deep sense of certainty. So I took a deep breath, dropped to one knee, and made a promise not just of love, but of a lifetime together.”

The proposal took about two months of planning and involved his siblings and closest friends.

“We kept it a complete surprise for Talia, from a hidden picnic setup at the top of the koppie to a discreet photographer capturing the moment from afar. Our friends even crafted a convincing double-date story to keep her unsuspecting. We hadn’t planned for anyone else to witness it, and later seeing posts from people who saw it unfold was a completely unexpected but beautiful surprise that made the moment even more special.”

When asked to tell the story of how they met, Subramoney said they were high school sweethearts.

“We started as friends, both pretending not to notice how much we liked each other. Over time, that friendship quietly grew into something more, and we’ve been connected ever since.”

Pillay picks up the tale: “When he got down on one knee, I was completely overwhelmed in the best possible way, laughing and crying all at once. It felt as if time stood still and the world around us disappeared.

“I said yes because Niren is my best friend, he’s kind, caring and endlessly supportive, he brings the best out of me and makes even ordinary days feel special. From the start, he’s always made me feel safe, understood, and truly loved. I couldn’t imagine sharing my life with anyone else.”
