Lonehill Seniors deliver early Christmas cheer to furry friends

A trolley full of donated dog food brought smiles and wagging tails as the Senior Citizens Coffee Club delivered their annual Christmas collection to Dog’s Trust in Diepsloot.

Early Christmas cheer reached grateful four-legged friends as the Lonehill Senior Citizens Coffee Club delivered their annual dog food collection to Dog’s Trust in Diepsloot.

After weeks of generous donations from club members, the seniors arrived with a trolley full of dog food, marking the end of their yearly animal outreach programme.

This delivery is part of the club’s commitment to giving back to the community and addressing isolation and loneliness among seniors.

Club co-founder Lorna Kurz said the initiative has become a meaningful tradition. “We support an orphanage throughout the year, and at Christmas, we focus on animals. This dog collection is something our members truly connect with.

“Just because someone is poor doesn’t mean they don’t love their dog. Dog’s Trust helps keep dogs with their owners by providing food, education, and veterinary support, and we’re proud to be part of that.”

Dog’s Trust works extensively in under-resourced communities, offering food assistance, sterilisation and vaccination programmes, and rescuing animals when necessary. Their focus remains on keeping dogs healthy and with their families whenever possible.

For the Senior Citizens Coffee Club, joy comes not only from social connections but also from having a purpose.

While the club creates a welcoming space for seniors to form friendships and fight loneliness, their outreach programmes ensure that their impact reaches far beyond monthly gatherings.
