Viral phone snatcher, linked to Diepsloot hijacking, appears in court

The suspect linked to a Diepsloot hijacking case and seen in a viral cell phone-snatching video has appeared in court.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), a 26-year-old Zimbabwean national, who lives in Johannesburg, appeared before the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court on a charge of robbery.

The NPA alleges that the robbery incident took place on December 28 in Brooklyn, when the complainant was walking into a restaurant. The accused can be seen in a viral video approaching the victim from behind, snatching her cell phone from her hands before fleeing the scene.

The video of the alleged robbery later circulated on social media platforms, drawing widespread attention.

Following the circulation of the video, the NPA confirmed that the suspect was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Tactical Response Unit in Hillbrow on December 30.

The suspect has previously been linked by law enforcement to a Diepsloot hijacking case involving an off-duty JMPD officer, with investigations into related incidents continuing.

JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca praised the Tactical Response Unit for its swift action, saying the arrest marked a significant breakthrough.

“The arrest of this individual is a significant breakthrough in our ongoing efforts to dismantle syndicates that terrorise our residents.

By linking this suspect to both the viral video and the hijacking of one of our own members, we are sending a clear message that there is no hiding place for criminals in Johannesburg.

“Our officers are working tirelessly to ensure that all those involved in the value chain of stolen property are brought to book. The search and arrest of more suspects is imminent.”

According to the NPA, the case was postponed to January 16 for bail investigations.
