Local rider and her horse share an unbreakable 26-year bond
Bred from one of South Africa’s most influential sires, Northern Guest, Santana’s life has been shaped by both pedigree and partnership, sharing a 26-year journey with Michelle Paine beyond the arena.
Santana and Michelle Paine are inseparable best friends, and they both know it to the tea.
The story of how they met is one for the books. Born on October 14, 1994, Santana entered Paine’s life in 2000 when he was just six years old. “From the very first moment I saw him, it was love at first sight.

The second I rode him, there was an unspoken understanding between us, as if we both knew this was a bond for life. We have grown up and grown old together, and he is my absolute world.”
As a direct son of the legendary Northern Guest, Santana carries an extraordinary lineage.
The American-bred thoroughbred became one of the most influential sires in South African horse racing history and remains the only one of Northern Dancer’s sons, exported to South Africa, to earn the title of Champion Sire, but for Paine, Santana’s true legacy lies beyond pedigree.
“His gentleness, his kindness, and the way he makes people feel safe, that cannot be bred or trained. It simply is who he is.”

Now retired from equestrian sport, Santana lives a slower, well-earned life. Under the care of Karen Eekman and his groom Liberty, Pain said he spends his days in a peaceful yard where his presence continues to leave an impression.

“He lives like the king he is. The king of kings. Everyone who walks into the yard is greeted with a soft nudge, always seeking connection, always giving love. He is a piece of my heart that exists outside of my body. He is my constant, my peace, my grounding force in life.”
Paine said calling his name and hearing him respond, brushing him, and simply being together, warms her heart. “My favourite memories are made daily. Another day with Santana is never ordinary. It is always a blessing.”
That connection has also shaped milestones beyond the yard. As an equestrian and public relations officer for Hirsch’s Homestores, Paine recently played a role in the 2026 Toyota Easter Festival Outdoor Grand Prix in Kyalami.
“Standing there, watching it all come to life, it was incredibly proud and emotional. Behind it all, the sport, the passion, is Santana. Being there felt like honouring him in the most meaningful way.”
