Valley FC star kicks off dream journey with Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development League
Talent and community support has helped Valley FC player Lutendo Tshikopo take the next step towards his professional football dream after joining Kaizer Chiefs' Youth Development League.
Every young footballer dreams of someday wearing the colours of one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
For local footballer Lutendo Tshikopo (14), that dream has become a reality, after earning a place in the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development League.
Lutendo joined Valley FC, a local club that runs out of Dainfern College, supporting boys from Diepsloot and surrounding communities, at the age of 10, after financial challenges forced him to leave another academy.

Although his football ability was immediately evident, the coaches believed he needed more than technical training to fulfil his potential. According to coach Karabo Legodi, the club focused on developing Lutendo as a person, as well as a player.
“When Lutendo first joined us, we could all see he had exceptional talent, but talent alone is never enough. We worked on helping him become more disciplined, mature, and confident. Football gave him an opportunity, but his character is what has allowed him to take that opportunity.”

Lutendo said the club’s coaches, parents, and volunteers played a crucial role in supporting his journey.
From covering affiliation costs to providing transport and football boots for trials and tournaments, the Valley FC community ensured financial barriers did not stand in the way of his dreams.
Those opportunities helped Lutendo progress through district football, earn provincial recognition, and compete at the prestigious Bill Stewart Tournament, where professional scouts noticed his talent.

Today, Lutendo is part of Kaizer Chiefs’ Youth Development League, one of South Africa’s leading pathways to professional football. “It feels great. I’m very happy to be part of Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development.”
He described being selected after competitive trials as one of the happiest moments of his young career. “There were a lot of good players at the trials, but I always believed in myself.”
Lutendo credits Valley FC for preparing him for the next step.
“The coaches entered us into many tournaments, and the RCLFA Championship League, where the competition was tough. We also trained very hard and had one-on-one sessions with coach Karabo, which helped me improve.
“I want to keep performing well and, hopefully, one day play for the Kaizer Chiefs first team.”
Legodi hopes Lutendo’s achievement will inspire the club’s younger players.
“His journey shows what is possible when talent is matched with hard work, the right guidance, and a community that believes in you. We hope every child at Valley FC sees that their dreams are achievable if they stay committed.”
