Silence from roads department as Lonehill traffic lights fail again after brief repair
Questions to the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department remain unanswered as motorists continue battling congestion.
“What is causing the delay in repairing the traffic lights? When will the issue finally be resolved? And are any interim measures being put in place to assist motorists?”
These are the questions posed to the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department regarding the ongoing failure of traffic lights at the intersection of Lonehill Boulevard and Main Road in Lonehill, but despite repeated inquiries, the department has yet to respond.

The silence comes as frustration among residents and motorists continues to grow after the traffic lights, which have been out of order for weeks, briefly returned to operation before failing again days later.
Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy confirmed that the traffic lights were repaired on May 5, but the fix did not last.
“I am not sure what happened after, but I will follow up with the department today.”
Residents said the recurring malfunction has once again turned the busy intersection into a daily bottleneck, particularly during peak traffic periods.
Regular commuter Nic McLean said the ongoing issue continues to disrupt his daily schedule.

“I’ve had to adjust my entire routine because of this. I now leave earlier for work and sometimes get home later just to avoid the worst of the traffic. I don’t want to spend unnecessary time sitting in my car because of something that should have been fixed already.”
Reddy said residents have consistently raised concerns about congestion and road safety at the intersection.
He said he previously escalated the matter to the Johannesburg Roads Agency, only to be informed that the traffic lights fall under the jurisdiction of the Gauteng Roads and Transport Department.
The questions were sent to the roads department on April 14. King Mthombeni acknowledged the query saying that it has been relayed to the relevant unit for response. We followed up with him again on May 22.
