Gianna’s love affair with gymnastics began during the lockdown when she would watch YouTube videos of gymnast Salish Matter, inspiring her to try out the moves at home.
However, it wasn’t until after lockdown that Gianna started training at Junxion Gymnastics, where she found her passion for gymnastics.
“I love learning new tricks on the beam and the bar but tumbling is my favourite because you can go so fast and high,” said Gianna.

Receiving her Central Gauteng Junior Colours was a dream come true for Gianna, who credited her hard work and dedication to her coaches and training.
“It’s been very fun because I love my coaches and have good friends at gymnastics. But it is hard work and can get very tiring because I have gym every day from Monday to Thursday and competitions on some weekends.”

Despite the challenges, Gianna’s determination and passion for the sport have paid off. She has had the opportunity to compete in several events and has even watched videos of one of her idols, Simone Biles, for inspiration. “I watch a lot of videos of Simone Biles, she is very strong and brave.”
One of Gianna’s most memorable competition experiences was when she won gold medals and made her coaches proud. “I learned that you must never miss practice and you must love what you do.”
As she looks to the future, Gianna has big plans. She hopes to compete at level 4 competitions, the Gym Games, and even overseas events. Her long-term goal is to represent South Africa at the Olympics, just like her local idol Caitlin Rooskrantz.

For now, Gianna’s advice to gymnasts who aspire to compete at a high level is simple: “Listen to your coaches and dream big.”
