Classic motorcycles put to the test at DJ Rally

The annual DJ Rally race saw 103 competitors this year.

The 2017 edition of the classic DJ Motorcycle Regularity Rally between Durban and Johannesburg recently took place.

The two day rally started at the Oxford Village Centre, in Hillcrest, at 6am on Friday, March 10, included an overnight stop in Newcastle and finished at the Classic Motorcycle Club, in Germiston, on the afternoon of Saturday, March 11.

“This annual event commemorates the road race which took place between 1913 and 1936,” said Claude Stander, clerk of the race course.

“Motorcycles competing this year were all made before 1936.

“The race was a success with 103 entries, of which 97 were first timers.”

Beverly Jacobs, who was taking part in the rally for the 19th time, was the first woman home.

“The route was brilliant and the race as a whole was fantastic,” said Jacobs.

“The speed in certain areas was faster than previous years but I enjoyed it and the weather was perfect.”

Jacobs added she intends to continue taking part in the race over the next few years and hopes to equal or better the race count of her dad, Larry Collins.

“My dad competed in the race 30 times,” she said.

Stander also said the team he worked with to organise the event contributed massively towards its success.

“I couldn’t do it alone, I worked with a great team and I appreciate their efforts,” said Stander.

“Thank you to everyone, including those who competed, for making this race special.”

The podium positions were filled by:

  • Gavin Walton in first place.
  • Mike Ward in second place.
  • Kevin Walton in third place.
