Local dojo achieves 69 medals at recent meet

Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy makes a stellar return to the ring, bagging 69 medals in the first meet.

Tebbutts Mixed Martial Arts Academy made an impressive return to the fighting ring last Saturday.

The dojo participated in the Full Contact Martial Arts (FCMA) tournament held at the Kempton Park Indoor Sports Centre, organised by shihan Aslam Mohammed.

The tournament featured all levels of fighting, including full continuous kumite, points fighting, continuous fighting, traditional kata and musical weapons.

“In our training right before the tournament, my students claim to have been sore for three days straight due to the intense sessions,” kanchu Alex Tebbutt joked.

“However, after the tournament, they were all thankful for the push I gave them to get fit and back into shape because they all managed to carry our dojo’s name high by performing well on the day.”

Tebbutt gathered 21 karatekas from the dojo to participate in the first meet of the year and they won 69 medals, making him a proud instructor.

“Everyone has good days and bad days, but everyone was in top form at the tournament,” said sensei Tiffany Knoop.

“Prior to the tournament, our younger belts felt the training was tough, but we older students, who have been with kanchu Tebbutt for a longer period, understood the importance because we know that everyone brings their best fight to the first tournament of the year.”

Tebbutt, who was a referee at the tournament, added that he was proud to be among the company of karatekas, who carried themselves well among others and respected the sport.

“Organisers, instructors and karatekas from other dojos commended my students for their team spirit and sportsmanship. It was an honour to know we are held in such high regard,” he said.

“Thank you to shihan Mohammed for organising an excellent tournament and to shihan Shabnum Mia for hosting the event, she was entertaining throughout the event.”

Fully back into action, the dojo is now in preparation for the upcoming FCMA National Championships, to be held on April 6. The venue will be communicated closer to the time.
