New committee revamps club

New Year and new committee.

After a very successful 2013 season, during which all three Elsburg Rugby Club teams played in the finals of the Merlin Reserve League, the first team was victorious in the final, played against Vaal Vikings.

To end the 2013 season on a high note, the newly chosen committee opted for a black-tie event for their annual prizegiving, and a senior member of the club, Chris “Boere” Pretorius, declared the function the best prizegiving ceremony in the history of the club.

Before the dust could settle after the function, the new committee immediately started with renovations of the club.

The club, in its 62nd year, is working towards another league title and, therefore, the services of Rudi van Jaarsveld Snr (Valke Platteland coach) and Gerald Venter (former Transvaal player and coach) have been brought in.

“I firmly believe that, by adding the two new recruits to the coaches of 2013, the club will be a force to be reckoned with in the coming season,” said the chairman Jacques van Tonder.

“A few highlights of the year included a golf day and the annual rugby tournament against Parys Rugby Club.

“The club invite all old players and any new players to join, as we will enter a first, second and u-21 team into the league.”

The club are also looking to bring back a “golden oldie” team.

Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 6.30pm and 8pm.

To be successful, the club relies on financial assistance from companies in the surrounding areas and, therefore, will start with advertising boards.

Should any company wish to advertise at the club, they are welcome to contact van Tonder.

If any members of the community wish to assist, as committee members, coaches, players or in any other way, contact van Tonder on 073 461 1775, or Skillie van Wyk on 076 224 8006.
