Metro plans to implement the following measures to control water demand

Metro shares its plans to control the water demand.

Many Germiston residents have been up-in-arms over the lack of water in the city.

The GCN has fielded many of these complaints, while attempting to get clarification from the metro.

The metro responded to the queries on Friday.

“In the wake of extremely high water usage in parts of the Germiston area, the City of Ekurhuleni will today implement measures to control water demand in a bid to stabilise the water interruption situation,” said Themba Gadebe, of the metro’s department of communications and brand management.

The measures put forward by the metro include, resetting the pressure reduction valve, to drop the water pressure by one bar.

“We will further curb the supply from the Russell Reservoir from 8pm to 6am, in an attempt to normalise the water situation, by ensuring the reservoir has sufficient time to fill up,” explained Gadebe.

It has been reported that the reservoir has been running low since Tuesday, and that this has affected areas such as Lambton, Castleview, Albermarle, Dinwiddie, Wadeville, Hazeldene, Hazel Park, Norton Small Farms and Buhle Park (Klippoortjie Park).

Gadebe said: “In this regard, the municipality has dispatched six water tankers in Cachet, in First Avenue, Second Avenue, Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue as well as in Frank and Beacon streets.

“Meanwhile, four water tankers are currently roving around the Tsakane area, which is experiencing a water supply interruption ranging from low water pressure to no water.

“Tsakane has been affected since last night, when the Mapleton pump station failed as a result of a power supply interruption.”

At this time the metro again appeals to residents to reduce their water consumption.

“To stabilise the water situation, all water users are requested to use water sparingly, by withholding all forms of irrigation, washing of vehicles, use of hose pipes and filling of swimming pools,” Gadebe added.

“Residents are again urged to report any leaks or burst pipes in their area, in order to avoid unnecessary water losses.”
