Zone Seven FC win SAFA Ekurhukeni Super League

Teams from Kathorus did not impress during the South African Football Association (SAFA) Ekurhuleni Super League play-offs that were played in Kathorus area over two weekends in June.

The tournament began with the group stages and quarterfinals at Eden Park Sports Grounds on the weekend of June 16 and June 17.

The semi-finals, as well as the finals, were played at Vosloorus Stadium on June 29.

Zone Seven FC from Tembisa became the champions as they defeated Kempton Park FC 3-0 in the finals at the Vosloorus Stadium.

Fourteen teams from around Ekurhuleni, including Leeds United, TW Milan FC, Clever Boys, Reedville FC, Shining Stars, Mkhonto FC, Kempton Park FC, Takers FC, Samba Boys, Cambridge FC, Golden Boys, Zone Seven FC, Elco Santos and Mhlophe FC, took part.

There were three teams from the Kathorus area – Shining Stars, Mkhonto FC and Takers FC – and did not impress in the competition.

Mkhonto FC and Takers FC were defeated at the group stages of the competition while Shining Stars bowed out of the competition at the quarterfinal stages of this prestigious tournament.

According to Jabu Nkosi, the chairperson of the Vosloorus Local Football Association (VLFA), the tournament went very well.

“Everything went according to plan. All teams that took part in the competition displayed good football. “Unfortunately, there could be only one winner – Zone Seven FC,” said Nkosi.

He thanked all coaches for preparing the teams for the play-offs.

The results from the semi-finals are as follow:

Kempton Park FC played their first semi-finals against Reedville FC and won 4-1 while the second semi-finals saw Samba Boys from Reiger Park lock horns with Zone Seven FC and drew 2-2. The game was decided in the penalty shootout that saw Zone Seven FC from Tembisa win the game 2-1.

The long-awaited final was played between Kempton Park FC and Zone Seven FC.

The team from Tembisa, coached by legendary Jerry ‘Legs of Thunder’ Skhosana (a former Orlando Pirates striker), won by three goals to nil.

The two teams that played in the final qualify to take part in SAB League next season.

The winners went away with the first prize trophy, medals and will participate for free in SAB League The second place finishers took home the second place prize of medals and will also participate for free in the first season in the SAB League.
