Two employees of a company contracted to council were arrested on July 4, after they were found in possession of an aluminum cable stolen from Sinclair Street, in Bedfordview, earlier this week.
The cable, already partly stripped of aluminum, was found stored in the company’s yard, in a park on Homestead Road, in Bedfordview.
Clr Michéle Clarke, the councillor for Ward 20, after being informed of the suspected theft, immediately called the EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit members.
Metro Police officers found the aluminum-laden cable stashed away in the company’s container.
The site manager identified two of his colleagues as the people who had brought the stolen cable to the yard.
It emerged that the cable was stolen in Sinclair Street, where the contracted company is upgrading the road.
Clarke expressed great appreciation for the swift response of the Metro Police officers, as well as for the fact that the stolen cable was recovered and two arrests were made.
The two suspects, aged 27 and 37, were booked at the Bedfordview Police Station and were expected to appear in the Edenvale Magistrates Court on July 5, to face cable theft charges.
