Aircraft crash under investigation

Two die in light aircraft crash.

A man and woman died at the scene of a light aircraft crash near Rand Airport, in Germiston, on Friday afternoon (June 21).

Three men and a woman were found on an open field with the ruins of the aircraft, by Netcare 911 paramedics and other emergency services.

“Tragically one of the men and the woman lost their lives during the accident, while the other two men sustained critical injuries,” said Santi Steinmann, media liaison officer for Netcare 911.

William Ntladi, media liaison officer for Ekurhuleni emergency services, informed the GCN that the cause of the crash is unknown, but an investigation is underway.

“The exact details related to the cause of the crash and preceding events will remain the subject of a Civil Aviation Authority investigation,” said Steinmann.

Civil Aviation Authority informed the GCN that no further comment or information with regards to the aircraft crash will be released to the media until the investigation had been completed.

“We’ve been informed that the aircraft took off from Rand Airport and was headed to Kriel, in Mpumalanga,” added Ntlhadi.

“The aircraft was completely crashed.

“It seemed to have landed on its propeller,” he said.

“The two critically injured occupants were airlifted to the Union Hospital, in Alberton, and the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.”
