Victory and defeat for Simmer
Simmer's first team lose at semi-final, while the u-19 side wins the trophy.
Germiston Simmer’s first rugby team were disappointed after their match against Wes Wits, at Harlequins, on Saturday.
They played a hard semi-final and gave away tries in the first half.
The four tries that Simmer scored in the second half were not enough for a win and they lost 36-22.
“Well done to the boys for getting this far in the 2013 Senior Grand Challenge,” said club official Ryan Dennis.
“The objective for this season was to reach the quarter-finals and we have surpassed that and made the semis. ”
Hopefully this is the start of a Simmer comeback to top the log in 2014.
The u-19s went all the way and managed to pull off a 19-7 win against Alexandra, to take the cup.
They opened with a try from right wing Thato “Smiley” Riba and then relaxed a little, letting Alexandra run from the breakdowns.
Simmer’s defence was, however, spot on, and they managed to keep the opposition out.
In the second half, Alexandra managed to break through that defence and scored a converted try, thereby levelling the scores at 7-7.
Simmer then regained their structure and managed to provide for good contesting at the breakdowns.
Blindside flank Shaun Gurtz (captain) scored an unconverted try to take the score to 12-7.
The forwards built on this and eventually created enough space for scrumhalf Mark Dos Santos to dart through (albeit a bit lateral) and provide a well-timed offload to Smiley, who went through for his second try.
This was converted and the scoreboard showed 19-7.
The forwards played well as a unit under the leadership of Shaun Gurtz and Stefan Stevens and the backline showed composure, running at the opposition at every opportunity.
Centres Anton Viljoen and Brandon (Bam) Dos Santos did exceptionally well in terms of attack and defence.
Riba was the Man of the Match, after he dotted down twice.
