Gun drama in Simmerfield

Two men have been arrested for possession of unlicensed guns and ammunition.

Working on a tip-off from the community, the Primrose SAPS arrested two men recently.

The police were out patrolling when they received information about armed men who were robbing people.

They went to Main Reef Road, Simmerfield, and saw three men standing on the side of the road as if they were awaiting transport to go to work.

“Our officers ordered the men to raise their hands as they wanted to search them,” said Const Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose SAPS.

“One policeman was conducting the search, while his partner was observing.”

The first man was searched and nothing was found on him.

The second man was then searched and the police officer found a .38 special firearm, with five rounds of live ammunition, in his possession.

When the policeman was about to search the third man, the man drew a Norinco pistol and pointed it at the police officer who was conducting the search.

The police officer who was observing the procedure grabbed the Norinco from the suspect, who ran away.

Three warning shots were fired by the policemen but the man did not stop.

He jumped into a green Toyota Conquest getaway vehicle, which was parked about 200m from the scene.

The remaining two suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, pointing of a firearm and being in possession of live ammunition.
