Rotary club raises funds at bike show

Great fun was had by all and funds were raised at the recent 1 000 Bike Show.

Rotarians and friends of the Rotary Club of Knights-Pendragon manned the bar at the recent 1 000 Bike Show – to serve thirsty bikers and raise substantial funds for their Charity Projects Fund.

The annual 1 000 Bike Show, organised by the Classic Motorcycle Club, based in Germiston and held at Germiston High School, is considered to be the premier and best organised motorcycle event in the country.

Over the two days of the event, a confirmed 8 200 motorbike enthusiasts were drawn from all corners of South Africa.

The accumulated bikes parked in the centre of the sports field were, alone, a feature of huge interest.

Massive exhibition marquees housed the outstanding, cream of present-day motorcycling machines on distributor stands, and these were enhanced by models from yesteryear, lovingly maintained in prime condition by their owners.

Row upon row of tented stands displayed accessories for machines and for those who ride and cherish them.

Music and a huge variety of foods and refreshments added to the carnival atmosphere.

The Rotary Club of Knights-Pendragon (based in Bedfordview and also serving Edenvale) sent out a call for volunteers on their Friends of Rotary network, to assist them in doing shifts.

Pre-organised into teams they came in their droves, husbands and wives, fathers and sons, brothers, cousins, friends and friends of friends.

Bill Brunjes, the Rotary coordinator said: “They worked their tails off.

“Their enthusiasm was focused on the objectives; to keep the 1 000 Bike Show at the very top of the biker list and to serve them and, through the large donation, to serve the Rotary Charity Projects.

“Most importantly, they had great fun doing it.”

Tired, but exhilarated, all involved said they’d be highly upset if they were not included next year.
