Strike continues

Numsa's demonstrations continue.

As the Numsa strike continues more reports of damage and intimidation have been received.

Jenny Pillay, the human resources manager of Auto and Truck Tyres (Pty) Ltd, informed the GCN that the company’s vehicles had been stoned and drivers again injured in further protest demonstrations that took this week.

Pillay also commented that “private vehicles belonging to the company’s sale representatives have been damaged by rocks”.

“This must stop before someone dies,” she added.

“When are the SAPS going to do something?”

Many residents have noticed the protesters carrying sticks as they march through the streets of Germiston, adding to the intimidation.

Pillay filed an industrial action report with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa on September 17.

She sited the following as violations of the picketing rules agreed to by RMI and Numsa:

  •  Intimidation of the company’s employees.
  •  Stoppage of deliveries to customers.
  •  Stoppage of deliveries from customers.
  •  The company’s white drivers being stoned and injured.
  •  The company’s sale representatives’ private vehicles being damaged by rocks.

After the report had been filed, the company proceeded with the steps required to secure a court order against Numsa.
