Choirs put their best foot forward

OR Tambo celebrated through song.

The metro is preparing a multifaceted celebration of the life and legacy of liberation stalwart Oliver Reginald Tambo.

This year the celebration will feature the Ekurhuleni Melting Pot National Choral Festival, which will be held at Carnival City on October 19.

This event will see South Africa’s top 10 choirs battling it out on stage for the ultimate prize of R250 000.

The Afro Tenors, Cenestra Male Choir, Khathorus Chorale, East Rand Choir, Tembisa High School Choir and Mbizana Village Choir have been asked to entertain the audience on the night of the festival.

Their performances are sure to be a hit with the audience, as they are preparing songs that were close to Oliver Tambo’s heart.

The choirs’ journey to their performance at the Big Top Arena at Carnival City began on August 24, when conductors attended a workshop presented by the University of Cape Town, Tshwane University and the world famous Julliard School of Music.

The aim of the workshop was to empower local choirs and develop their skills on how to run their choirs more effectively.

At the workshop the top 10 SA choirs were briefed by music experts on what to expect in the competition and about the competition’s songs.

The 10 choirs taking part in the competition are:

  •  Voices of the Nation – Gauteng
  •  Gauteng Chorister – Gauteng
  •  Kopano Chorus – Gauteng
  •  Thabong Serenade – Free State
  •  Belcanto Voices – Free State
  •  Transnet Port Terminal Choir – Eastern Cape
  •  Heavenly Voices – Western Cape
  •  SA Singers – KwaZulu-Natal
  •  Clermont Community Choir – KwaZulu-Natal
  •  African Chorus – KwaZulu-Natal
