Ask meter readers for identification

Residents urged to ask meter readers for identification.

The metro strongly advises homeowners to insist on an identity card from anyone who claims to be an employee of the metro, prior to them gaining entry or commencing work on the premises.

Council assures residents that all its contractors, including meter readers, have a Municipal Identity Card, carrying their photo on it, and they are supposed to present the card at any business or private premises that they visit to do a job.

This assurance comes after an incident in Bedfordview, when an alleged robber impersonated a municipal meter reader, thereby raising questions about the identification of municipal field workers.

“We have an obligation to ensure that our employees and contractors produce positive identification.

“In the same breath we request residents to be vigilant and to request positive identification.

“If not satisfied, residents have the right to phone the Emergency Call Centre on 011 458-0911 or 10177, or, when using cellphones, to dial 112 (fire, ambulance and Metro Police).

Other important numbers community members should be aware of include the Ekurhuleni Municipal Service Complaints line 0860 543 000, the SAPS Flying Squad 10111 and their local police station.
