Police respond to protest claims

SAPS respond to claims against them.

The Elsburg SAPS would like to take the opportunity to respond to the claims made against them by Auto and Truck Tyres Pty Ltd., in an article that appeared in the GCN of October 18, titled “Numsa reaches agreement”.

Jenny Pillay, human resources manager at Auto and Truck Tyres Pty Ltd., claimed throughout the demonstrations that, “Unfortunately, the SAPS still continue to do nothing to the picketers.”

Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police, responded to these claims, and said: “The SAPS, EMPD and the ACCU unit of the SAPS monitored the demonstrations and the Numsa members involved in the demonstrations from the first to the last day of the strikes.

“In certain incidents, a case docket was opened and suspects were also arrested by the police.

“This could happen because the SAPS were continuously monitoring the strike.”
