Rose of Hope Crèche and Care Centre, in the Goodhope informal settlement, had a flushing celebration on World Toilet Day, November 19.
They received new flushing toilets.
When Rose of Hope opened 10 years ago, they had a long drop (pit latrine) system and, with the help of Rotary clubs, a chemical toilet later replaced the long drop.
Marion Brown, together with her husband Alastair, from the Johannesburg East Rotary Club, paid regular visits to Rose of Hope helping them with food and blankets among other things and discovered that the centre was using the long drop system.
Over the past two years the Rotary Club of Johannesburg East, together with the Gosford, Umina and other Rotary clubs around the world, embarked on installing the flushing toilet system.
For the past two years, Rose of Hope has been using a chemical toilet, and now they have three new flushing toilets.
“More people world-wide have access to a cellphone than to a toilet, so it gives us great pleasure that we were able to help,” said Marion Brown, the patron of Rose of Hope.
“I am very happy; now the children have access to clean and safe toilets,” said Shadrack Lushaba, founder of Rose of Hope Crèche and Care Centre.
“The long drop was unpleasant and very uncomfortable.”
In other news, Rose of Hope has a graduation scheduled for December 7, when 28 children will graduate and head for Grade One in 2014.
Lushaba said the centre is looking for sponsors and any form of sponsorship is welcome.
