16-days of activism

Mayor appeals for no violence against women and children.

During the Ekurhuleni Metro’s council meeting, in Germiston, on November 26, the mayor, Mondli Gungubele, appealed for no violence against women and children.

November 25 marked the start of the 16 Days of Activism for No violence Against Women and Children.

“May I take this moment to appeal to all of us to lead the gospel of non-violence against women and children in our various constituencies?” asked Gungubele.

“Let us all say no to the scourge of women and children abuse.”

The mayor continued to say that abuse in any form cannot be allowed to continue in “our” space.

“As leaders, we are expected to lead from the front, with the right and positive messages in our communities,” he added.

In actual fact, said Gungubele, it is wrong for this campaign to happen only November 25 to December 10.

“This, to me, is a campaign for 365 days a year,as crimes against our most vulnerable in society do not just happen in November and December, but throughout the year,” he added.

Gungubele said that, just over a month ago “we had two toddlers poisoned, allegedly by their own mother, in Zonkizizwe.

“Recently, a 10-year-old boy from Ramaphosa was abducted, killed and set alight.

“Enough is enough.”
