Woman raped at local tavern

Man arrested for rape.

A 30-year-old man, from the Makause informal settlement, was arrested recently, following the rape of a woman at a local tuck shop/tavern.

The arrest was made when the victim called at the Primrose Police Station, to lay charges against the owner of the establishment.

The woman claimed that she had been at the tuck shop/tavern to look for a friend, when the tavern owner forced her into a nearby room.

She explained how the man pointed a gun at her and warned her that if she made a noise he would kill her.

He allegedly undressed the victim and raped her.

The woman’s baby, who she had been carrying at the time of the attack, was left to cry unattended on the floor.

The man, realising the child would draw attention with its crying, stuck cellotape over the baby’s mouth.

“We condemn such a barbaric action,” said Const Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“We hope that the law will take its course and that this man will be severely punished, especially as we are in the middle of the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children Abuse.”

The man was arrested and appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court, where his case was postponed for a bail application.
